Hi everyone, my name is Megan & I am the face behind Twelve Poles Photography. I am sure some of you are wondering why I chose the name Twelve Poles & where it came from. So in light of explaining this to you, I have evidently decided to write you a short novel about the roots of the name haha.
To begin, I want to let you know that I am Canadian born, but I grew up as a third culture kid overseas in Saudi Arabia. When I was 8 years of age, my Dad accepted a job offer to work as an engineer for Saudi Aramco, the worlds largest oil company based out of Saudi Arabia. My family made the big move from the small town of Quispamsis, New Brunswick to the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia in September of 2001, shortly before the events of 9/11 transpired. Our new home became Ras Tanura (Najmah), one of the four Saudi Aramco gated communities or as we like to call them compounds, built in the 1940s. I attended an American based school in the compound, made up of students & teachers from around the globe.
Due to growing safety concerns at the time, many families moved out of the expatriate communities in Saudi Arabia and ventured back to their home countries. These circumstances generated a unique opportunity to grow up in an international community consisting of a very small, close knit group of families & friends. Those of us who remained on the compound lived within a couple blocks from each other, we went to school & participated in extracurricular activities together, and spent just about every monumental occasion together.
My upbringing was unique to say the least, it had its perks & shortcomings, but it was never boring & I wouldn’t change it for the world. I was able to experience some pretty remarkable things growing up as a TCK residing in Saudi Arabia. On holidays, we would go on your ‘typical’ family camping trip to the Arabian Desert & visit ancient ruins or go on a scuba diving trip to the Red Sea. On weekends, we would spend most of our time at the beach, because the Persian Gulf Sea was in our backyard…literally! I will get into this in more detail in my upcoming blog posts, but for now I will get to the point of my story i.e. where in the world did the name Twelve Poles come from?
My house in Saudi was located right on the beach, so every morning I was spoiled with a view of crystal clear waters & the sound of the waves gently sweeping the seashore. When the tide was low, twelve poles would emerge from the sea, far out in the distance. For my friends & I, the twelve poles were always a significant childhood landmark & we believed that they were there to indicate where the hammerhead sharks & other dangerous sea creatures hung out. So finally, me being the sentimental person that I am, I naturally wanted to come up with a brand that had a unique & personal story to tell & this is how I founded Twelve Poles Photography.
